Mellor Olsson has particular expertise in the area of Environmental Law, and is very familiar with the relevant legislation.

We have had numerous dealings with the requirements of the Environment Protection Act, particularly in respect of activities of environmental significance or major environmental significance. This has included in relation to piggeries, scrap metal recycling yards, crematoriums, petrol stations, chicken feedlots and other farming activities.

Mellor Olsson has experience acting for a number of Government clients on issues such as waste management and contaminated land sites. This has included preparing the necessary documents to give effect to a transfer of liability for site contamination in accordance with Section 103E of the Environment Protection Act.

We have dealt with a range of water related issues, including an apartment building at Henley Beach which had groundwater and sea water issues, and court proceedings regarding water entitlements for rural allotments.

Along with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), we assisted the Local Government Association in preparing a briefing paper in respect of the land fill gas issue in Cranbourne, Victoria and its potential implications for South Australian Councils. We have presented seminars on this topic in conjunction with the EPA and the Local Government Association, particularly looking at how conditions of development approval can deal with environmental matters.

Mellor Olsson has been extensively involved in providing advice and assistance to Government clients on matters involving the Local Nuisance and Litter Control Act 2016.

We have for numerous years been corporate members of the National Environmental Law Association, with Tim Mellor, being a past President of the Association.
