Join us at our August Local Government Forum hosted by Mellor Olsson Partner, John Love, Jake Goodwin and Associate, Matilda Wise. In this two-hour session we will explore everything you need to know about enterprise bargaining and managing psychosocial hazards in the workplace.

Session 1: Managing psychosocial hazards – a practical approach to balancing risk and resilience

Speaker: Matilda Wise, Associate, Mellor Olsson Lawyers

Managing psychosocial risks in the workplace is often more prescriptive than other areas of compliance and has become increasingly challenging, particularly in workforces with lower levels of resilience. As the obligations on employers to manage mental health at work continue to grow, and scrutiny from regulators, the media and the community increases, it is important that Council’s take practical and proactive steps to support their people.

Matilda Wise, Associate, will discuss how employers can identify and respond to psychosocial hazards in less resilient workforces, including the ways workplace structures and practices can contribute to risk. She will also explore the value of early intervention, and the role leaders play in setting expectations, managing issues effectively, and supporting a healthy workplace culture.

Session 2: Negotiating better Enterprise Agreements

Speakers

  • John Love, Partner, Mellor Olsson lawyers
  • Jake Goodwin, Director of JAG Associates Pty Ltd

Enterprise agreements have been a feature of the local government sector for over three decades. Despite their promise of delivering productivity and flexibility for Councils in return for higher wages for employees, most enterprise agreements in the sector contain less flexibility; more rigidity (and higher wages) for Councils.

Mellor Olsson Partner, John Love and experienced industrial relations consultant, Jake Goodwin will discuss how the local government sector can get more out of the enterprise agreement negotiation process, for the benefit of Councils, employees and rate payers.

Together, they will discuss and outline critical components to successful EA negotiation outcomes including:

  • Key Stages of Bargaining
  • Pre-negotiation preparation
  • Negotiation Process
  • Post Negotiation Operationalisation
  • Linking EA Negotiation Strategy to Business Objectives and “Value Imperatives”
  • Role of an effective Communication and Engagement Plan
  • Stakeholder Mapping and Management
