Two second-year university students studying agricultural science - Alisha Carter and Jarred Hutchison - have recently been participating in Livestock SA's 2024 Future Livestock Leaders program. As part of the program, the students met with Primary Industries Minister Clare Scriven, Primary Producers SA chief executive officer Caroline Rhodes, Livestock SA president Joe Keynes and Blueprint chair Elke Hocking.
Mellor Olsson gave them a legal session, while on Thursday last week, they spent time at Stock Journal with editor Elizabeth Anderson and livestock editor Catherine Miller, before attending Livestock SA's AGM and industry dinner that night. This week they also participated in a Lifetime Ewe Management Program group.
Jarred, who grew up on a beef, dairy and thoroughbred farm in South Africa, hoped to strengthen his professional network and gain insights into sustainability and innovation within the livestock industry. While Alisha, who runs her own cattle herd and is hoping to build a career as a stock agent, is eager to explore industry trends in livestock breeding and market preferences, bringing back knowledge to her operations.
Livestock SA chief executive officer Travis Tobin said the program was structured to give recipients exposure to various organisations across the livestock industry, showcasing the diverse career paths and roles that drive the sector.
